Summer Institute: Behavioral Strategies for students with Complex Needs
Presented by:
Kathy Meredith and Mandy Carter
This 3 day training will provide the learner the basic knowledge for 3 evidence based behavioral strategies to apply in the classroom for students with a low set of communicative and academic skills. These strategies include: discrete trial, pivotal response and structured routines.
The goals for implementing these strategies for the student includes: extending time on task, independent responding using receptive and expressive, developing basic pre academic skills, and skill in receptive and expressive communication skills.
Learning Objectives
- The learner will be given basic hands on practice in the components of these evidence based practices:
- Data collection: Determine present levels of performance and intervention data to note where to begin and note progress.
- Prompting: Determine most to least prompting strategies and how to fade them out to promote independent responding.
- Task analysis: Breaking down the selected skill so that errorless learning takes place.
- Positive Reinforcement: Determine what tangible and social reinforcers that motivate
- Feedback: Determine how to provide feedback for correct and incorrect responding
- Direction delivery: Determine how the adults will deliver the instructions
- The learner will be able to observe, practice in a simulated format and develop an action plan for implementation in their classroom.
- The learner will gain a basic understanding of behavioral terms used in these practices.
- The learner will gain an understanding of underlying functions of the behavior of students with complex needs as it pertains to the above strategies.
- Max of 40 Participants
